Visitor Visa (TRV) for Canada

Visit Canada for tourism, business, or to see family — with a professionally prepared application.
A Canadian Visitor Visa (also called a Temporary Resident Visa – TRV) is a counterfoil (visa sticker) placed in your passport that allows you to travel to Canada as a temporary visitor. Approval is based on whether an officer is satisfied you will visit temporarily and leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

What is a Visitor Visa (TRV)?

A TRV is required for citizens of many countries who want to travel to Canada as a visitor. It is different from an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization), which is for visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada. IRCC assesses your application and, if approved, issues a visa in your passport.
Important: A visa approval does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a Canada Border Services Agency officer decides whether you meet entry requirements and how long you may stay (often up to 6 months, unless the officer authorizes a different period).

Key Eligibility Factors

IRCC does not approve visitor visas based on one document alone — it’s a total picture. Officers typically assess whether you are a genuine temporary visitor and whether you meet basic admissibility requirements.
You generally must show:
  • Purpose of travel (clear reason and realistic itinerary)
  • Ties to your home country (work, family responsibilities, assets)
  • Financial ability to support your trip
  • Intent to leave Canada at the end of your stay
  • Admissibility (no serious criminality or security issues)

Documents you may need:

IRCC’s document lists vary by case and country, but common documents include:
Passport and identity documents.
Travel purpose evidence (itinerary, bookings, etc.).
Supporting documents for minors.
Passport and identity documents.
Invitation letter and host documents.
